Up Betatakin Navajo National Monument Slideshow

Harvey Leake great grandson of John Wetherill, guided several Wetherill family members during the 2008 Wetherill reunion to the Betatakin ruins in the Navajo National Monument. The hike from the Betatakin trail head from the Shanto Plateau is a strenuous five-mile round trip, which began on the mesa top above the ruin, and descended 600 feet. The ruins were discovered by John Wetherill and his Navajo guide in 1909. Below the ruins are a grove of Gamble Oak trees that completely covers the trail. Up the canyon from Betatakin is a remnant grove of 700 year old Douglas Fir. I think this ruin is the most beautiful in all the Southwest.
